This week, there's a little bit of news to share on Pieces of Me, my poetry chapbook, which is being published by Finishing Line Press. It's a collection of love, loss, and remembrance, as well as the experience of being half-Mexican and raised without knowing one's father. Reader Views gave it an excellent and comprehensive editorial review. It's always so interesting to see how others interpret your poetry.
For years, poems have been buried inside, deep within the heart, or tucked away on paper or the computer. Then, one day, they sprout and blossom from underground, and you learn of the beauty they serve to others. It's like being gifted twice: once when you can release your thoughts into words and again when someone sees themselves in the poetry or finds the sensations it evokes as a gift. A gift they've received—from you.
Soon, all these poems will float into the world's ears—well, the world of readers who pick it up and dive inside.
With just two weeks until the discounted pre-sale ends, I'm grateful for your support. I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed that this adventure will pass the finish line, and I couldn't have made it this far without you.
Last week, I thought about the review I received and decided to make a video capturing some of the heartfelt words written. My husband and son are pros with videos, but I decided to jump in and try to make one myself. This girl likes to be self-reliant!
I wanted to share this personal journey with you to make you feel like you are part of it because you are.
It makes me tear up while watching it. Although the book has some sorrowful elements, the poetry is not all gloomy. There are lots filled with love and magic, too!
I've often been told my poems and photography are sad but hopeful. As I grow older, I realize that knowing despair makes one appreciate life's joy, happiness, and peaceful simplicity much more.
I leave you with a fun little mental exercise. Once, while in a writing class, the brilliant instructor asked us to write down all our favorite characters from books, movies, television, etc. Then, she asked us to write down their qualities. And here's the amazing part. She said, if you look closely, you'll see that these characters have your characteristics. That's why you're drawn to them. Lo and behold, my list had names like Aragron and Rocky. Both are a bit melancholy but go-getters and hopeful! Give it a try! It's quite interesting. And if you want to let me know how it worked for you, please do! :)
Peace, Love, and Wishes of Happiness,
Monique
